ABOUT ME

Pushing boundaries and capturing extreme contrasts under the most adverse conditions – that is what distinguishes the artistic work of Alexander Maria Lohmann and gives his works their extraordinary power and depth.

Lohmann captures moods, condenses them, and places them in a new context. Ruptures, contrasts, and extreme experiences have always fascinated and accompanied him: personal tragedies repeatedly pushed the son of a photographer from Obergurgl in Tyrol to his own limits.

From these experiences, he developed his own unique perspective on situations and moments. After expeditions into jungles, deserts, and high mountains, Lohmann once again pushed his physical and mental limits, embarking on a life-threatening journey to war-torn Syria. Unstable ruins, lurking snipers, constant military checkpoints, and even the threat of the death penalty could not deter him.

Lohmann employs various artistic techniques to break the documented brutality of his photographs and make the deafening silence within them bearable. Appropriate motifs from Disneyland, overpainting, and digital manipulations create surreal contrasts and fascinating chance effects.
